Back in 2004, my wife and I decided to 'escape' from Canada. Its cold winters were becoming unbearable as we got older. Its high cost of living worried us as we approached retirement age. We researched and finally decided on Nicaragua. Why Nicaragua? It was, and is, considered one of the safest countries in the Americas and personal safety and security were number one. Secondly, you can own property and run a business even without residency status.
So in December 2005 we sold our home in downtown Toronto, put everything we owned in storage, and moved. This was a huge leap into the unknown. We had never even visited Nicaragua until we arrived here to start life over.
One of the last things done in Canada was to set up an internet blog site - gpnicaragua.com - Gordon & Pita in Nicaragua - to keep our friends and families in the loop as to what we were doing and assuring them that we were still alive. The purpose of that website has changed into what you see here.
We bought property on the beach in the little fishing village of Las Penitas west of the city of Leon and built a house and a small 4 room hotel with a restaurant.
